Mass Meeting of the
Salem City Republican Party

As Chairman of the Salem City Republican Committee and pursuant to the Plan of Organization and as recommended and directed by the Committee, I, Jesse T. Lynch, do hereby issue this call for a Mass Meeting to be held at 6:30 pm local time on Monday, May 1, 2017 at the Salem Civic Center for the purpose of nominating Republican candidates for the offices of Commissioner of the Revenue, Commonwealth Attorney, Sheriff, and Treasurer to be voted for the in the general election on November 7, 2017.

Qualifications for Participation

All legal and qualified voters under the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, regardless of race, religion, national origin or sex, who are in accord with the principles of the Republican Party and who, if requested, express in open meeting either orally or in writing as may be required, their intent to support all of its nominees for public office in the ensuing election, may participate as members of the Republican Party of Virginia in its mass meetings, party canvasses, conventions or primaries encompassing their respective election districts.

A voter who, subsequent to making a statement of intent, publicly supports a candidate in opposition to a Republican nominee shall not be qualified for participation in party actions for a period of four years.

In addition to the foregoing, to be in accord with the principles of the Republican Party, unless otherwise stipulated by the appropriate Official Committee, a person otherwise qualified hereunder shall not have participated in Virginia in the nomination process of a party other than the Republican Party with in the last five years. A single exception to this shall be approved for a voter that renounces affiliation with any other party in writing, and who expresses in writing that he/she is in accord with the principles of the Republican Party and intends, at the time of the writing, to support the nominees of the Republican Party in the future. Any voter that utilizes the foregoing exception, and thereafter participates in the nomination process of a party other than the Republican Party, shall not have the benefit of the exception identified in this paragraph thereafter. Within 30 days of receipt, the Official Committee shall provide a copy of this signed renunciation statement to the Republican Party of Virginia, to be maintained for a period of five years.

Candidate Filing Requirements

Candidates for a Republican nomination at said mass meeting must prefile a written statement on a completed official filing form provided by Salem City Republican Committee to Salem City Republican Chairman, Jesse Lynch at 926 Piedmont Ave, Salem, Virginia 24153 no later than 5:00 pm local time on Monday April 21, 2017. Postmarks do not govern.

Candidates for nomination shall include a check to the Salem City Republican Committee for the full mass meeting filing fee when they submit their written statement.

The mandatory mass meeting filing fee for each office to be nominated at the mass meeting is as follows:

  • Commissioner of the Revenue – $1484
  • Commonwealth Attorney – $1302
  • Treasurer – $1484
  • Sheriff – $1518

Registration and Additional Information

There will be no registration fee to vote in the mass meeting. Registration will begin at 6:00 p.m. and close 6:30 pm. Qualified voters who are in the registration line at 6:30 p.m. but not yet registered, will be allowed to register to participate in the mass meeting.

A full copy of this Call shall be posted on the Salem City Republican Committee website (www.SalemRepublicans.com) and the requirement that it otherwise be published in a newspaper is waived pursuant to Article VIII, Section A(2) of the Plan of Organization of the Republican Party of Virginia.

If no candidate properly files for any office then the mass meeting will be canceled.
